Midterm Reflection

Step One:

"I hope to have a greater understanding of music theory, and be able to use that knowledge in my vocal work, both academic and independent."

A. I have successfully completed five units of the class, and I believe that I have a better understanding of the topics covered, especially chords.

B. I do think that I am making good progress, I would like to be farther ahead in the course, but it is what it is, and I am still on time.

C. If I only relied on what I knew before I started the class, I would not be doing very well, so I am glad that I have been able to expand my knowledge. i am fabulous-Olivia

D. Working hard and struggling through the Alfred's and gateways and finally getting the Finale correct in the end.

E. Not setting aside enough time to do my theory work, focusing on other classes instead. Making it more of a priority would prevent this.

Step Two:

A. The outcome of these assessments have been, for the most part, good. I have done about what I expected myself to do, and I even got ahead in certain parts of the course. As the course load has gotten harder, I have fallen back into the "on time" track, but I'm picking up speed again.

B. I would say that my greatest strength is sticking with a hard topic until I get it right, as well as asking others for help when necessary.

C. For weaknesses, I can just work harder, take more notes, and watch more videos in those areas until I understand a topic and become stronger in it.

D. I would focus more on the handwritten notes rather than the screenshotted ones, as I tended to remember the handwritten topics easier than the ones that I had just screenshotted from Alfred. The handwritten ones are also easier to find.

Step Three:

A. For my lower benchmark scores (Chords, Intervals, and Sightreading) I would say that two of them have definitely increased, while I believe that one has remained the same. I would say that my chords have gone from a 3 to a 4, my Intervals have gone from a 3.5 to a 4.5, and my Sight Reading has remained about the same as it was at the beginning.

B. I am definitely making progress toward my goal, and I am pleased with the work that I have done thus far. I would like to continue this progress for the rest of the semester.

C. I really the Music Theory site with the different slides on one page that you go through because it bolds the text that is the most important, which is helpful for taking notes. I am also never without my Circle of Fifths for the various key signatures that are in the assignments that I am doing.

D. Mental ruts, or difficulty with other classes could interfere with my work habits, and I will prevent it by working through the ruts, and just trying my best to prioritize my time so I am getting to everything that I need to.

Step Four (on paper)

Step Five:

A. I have everything necessary for completion of each unit in each tab in my eportfolio, although, especially for the first couple of units, the organization is a little messy, which I would like to fix. I also have quite a lot of screenshotted notes, which are important, I just need to make sure I am also taking sufficient notes on paper as well. None of my submissions have been late (except for Unit Five, which was due to a tech issue)

B. I will continue on the same track for the most part, but I will also try to be a bit neater in the format of my screenshots, just so the page doesn't look as jumbled and everything is easy to find.

Step Six:

Some of the Alfred's are a little frustrating and out of order, but there isn't really anything that can be done about that; it's become almost a necessary evil. I also found a really great YouTube channel called HackMusicTheory that has some good, and short, videos on different topics. They are also still active, uploading every Monday.
