Modulation and Rainbow Connection

Step 2

  • Answer the following questions in your own words

  1. What is modulation?

Modulation is the process of changing from one key signature to another. This can also go with a complete change of the signature.

  1. Why would modulation be used in a composition?

A modulation could be used to: 1) add interest and variety to music, 2) can provide a sense of forward propulsion and drive the music into new levels of energy, 3) to provide a bridge between two songs of different.

  1. What types of modulations are there?

There is direct modulation, parallel modulation, and pivot chord modulation.

  1. Cite 3 of your favorite songs that modulate

Bon Jovi-"Livin on a Prayer", Panic! At the Disco-"LA Devotee", Mozart-Queen of the Night Aria ("Die Holle Rache").

  1. What listening clues heard in the Rainbow Connection indicate a modulation?

A swell/crescendo from the violins/other string instruments indicates a modulation.

  1. Cite the time of the change and provide the lyric location

The timestamp in the video is at 2:06-2:08 and the lyric location is at "MAGGGGIICCC"

Secondary Dominants Summary:

Secondary dominants are V chords that are borrowed from a different key than the one that the piece, or portion of the piece is being written in (or different from the tonic key). Secondary dominants are used to add harmonic color to a piece, as well as to embellish chord progressions. Secondary dominants are used in Classical, Jazz, and modern music.

7ths and Inversion Reflection

Step 6

  • Answer the following questions regarding Dominant 7th Chords & Inversions

  1. What is the purpose of inversions?

The purpose of inversions is to make chord transitions sound smoother, as well as give them a different sound.

  1. What material would you feel confident explaining to your classmates?

What inversions are and what they do. I could also explain how root position and 1st and 2nd inversions work.

  1. What material would you not feel confident explaining?

I would not feel confident explaining figured bass, that is still confusing to me. I am also still a little unclear on the nomenclature of the different inversions.

  1. What material do you think you understand but cannot explain at this point?

I think that I understand seventh chord inversions, but do not know completely how to explain them yet.

  1. What can you do to prepare yourself to be able to explain this material?

I can do the worksheets, review my notes, possibly redo the Alfred if need be. General review of the troublesome topics would be beneficial.
